Intent

RE at Worsley Bridge aims to develop the pupil’s knowledge and understanding of the religions and beliefs which form part of the multicultural society in which we live. The teaching of RE gives all our pupils the opportunity to understand their place in the world and how a diverse collection of cultures coming together can have positive impact on the world in which we live as well as our individual communities. Understanding how faiths and beliefs shape communities is fundamental for children to have a wider perspective of their place in society. Giving children opportunities to explore world religions, beliefs and cultures is crucial to be able to choose their own pathway of faith. We believe exploring the concepts of religion and belief whilst promoting spirituality, morality and diversity, develops character and social understanding. 

Implementation

Our curriculum inspires our children to be inquisitive about the world around them and encourages them to make links throughout their learning. Our RE lessons allow pupils to develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity as well as other principal religions, religious traditions, and world views. We follow the Discovery curriculum where key questions linked to themes are investigated and discussed throughout the unit of work, encouraging children to think deeply and consider new ideas which help to form opinions.  

All pupils have the opportunity to be immersed in a religion or cultural traditions through active learning experiences such as welcoming visitors, listening to stories and experiencing a range of places of worship throughout their time at Worsley Bridge helping to prepare them for their learning beyond primary school.  

Our curriculum aims to contribute to pupils’ personal development and well-being through promoting mutual respect and tolerance both within our school community but also in our wider community. The children have opportunities for personal reflection and deepening their understanding of the significance of religion in both their lives and the lives of others. 

Impact

We believe exploring the concepts of religion and belief and their roles in the spiritual, moral and cultural lives of people in our diverse society helps the children to develop a moral awareness and social understanding. Our RE curriculum inspires children to become active learners, confident and unique individuals who are responsible citizens. It gives them knowledge and understanding to strengthen their capacity for making moral judgements as well as questioning the world around them. 

The teaching of RE in primary schools across England is internationally admired for its concept of ‘learning from religion.’ At Worsley Bridge, we believe RE allows children and young people to build their identity and understand their culture and the culture of others. This can only breed a culture of tolerance and support them in building a moral framework, which is so important, as they grow and develop into active and effective members of our community. 

Our curriculum provokes pupils to consider challenging questions about the ultimate meaning and purpose of life, differing beliefs and the nature of right and wrong. It allows pupils to develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other principal religions, religious traditions and world views.
